Celebrating a Milestone

Today is my 20th wedding anniversary. Two decades. Seems just yesterday I met this man on the front porch of my house . . . watching tentatively as a federal agent came up to interview me about my job and being offered a bribe.

Yes, I married the agent who arrived to investigate a bribery attempt in my office. And yes, Lowcountry Bribe started off about like that real life situation. It seems only right that the book was published the year hubby and I celebrate a huge milestone together, because I've written on this book for most of those 20 years.

Funny about milestones. You look back, counting the years, the months, the obstacles, the tears, and it doesn't seem like such a long time ago. Choosing to write LCB was a personal one, using a personal event to spin off a marvelous mystery, each evening sitting outside, outlining one more chapter, pondering how to make Carolina Slade's life more difficult. The real event was very hard on me, but I got over it. Writing about someone else also going through a hard time she never saw coming at her, was cathartic for me.

So today, as hubby surprises me here and there with little celebrations of our meaningful life together, I can't help but think that Lowcountry Bribe is a part of both of us. Almost as if we birthed this child together. If he hadn't come along, neither would have the book. He's just as proud of Lowcountry Bribe as I am. Just don't ever ask him if he's Wayne Largo!!!

Congratulations! We're "only" at 12 years, but somehow we've managed to move five times in three different countries. I sense a trend. . .

What a great post and what a great moment to celebrate. How nice to see how much has happened and how far you've come. And having met you both, I can say it's wonderful to see two centered, happy people who've found their partner and co-pilot for adventure.

Thanks, Stella. Yes, he does look like an agent, doesn't he? It's rather sexy, I think.
